On Friday 8th of October 2010, Hepburn Wind held a celebratory event to mark the 'turning of the sod', as construction for Australia's first ever community-owned wind farm officially commenced! The two turbines (which will be located on Leonards Hill, 10km south of Daylesford, Victoria) are expected to be operational in the first half of 2011. Expert analysis predicts that the wind farm will annually generate more power than used by the houses of Daylesford. What a shining example Hepburn Wind represents for community groups around Australia. No doubt the project will inspire many more community-owned renewable energy initiatives. It's been five years in the making, but well worth the wait! If you're feeling inspired and want to set up a community-owned renewable energy project, the process might seem somewhat overwhelming. But, through the Hepburn Wind project, there's help at hand! Embark has been set up to provide resources that will support groups in their renewable energy endeavours. Embark is a non-profit organisation focused on accelerating the uptake of community renewable energy projects by providing practical capacity-building tools and seed and investment funding.
