Welcome to the BREAZE Food in season!
Our food choices are responsible for as much as 37% of our ecological footprint. Where the food you eat comes from, how it is grown and the way it is processed and packaged all contribute to this overall impact. Eating food when it is in season, not only tastes better, it is probably local and also reduces the likelihood that it has been flown from the other side of the world to meet consumer demand for food all year round – in and out of season. Eating local, seasonal food is good for our local community and our environment.
The good news is we eat everyday, which means every day is an opportunity to make a difference... So to all you eaters out there, the time has come to eat our way to a better future!
Here will be helping you, the eater, make good choices. We will highlight the fresh produce that is in season locally that you should be taking advantage. We will also be sharing tried and tested recipes that will not only impress friends and family, but importantly be kind to the environment in which we live. For those gardeners out there, we will also be tapping into the wealth of local information in our region to give a reminder of what to plant and when in our Ballarat climate.

We believe that there is nothing more inspiring that seeing what other people, just like you are doing locally. So, from big to small, families to community gardens, courtyards to commercial businesses, we are going to bring you a series of snapshots to celebrate the people and food of our region. We hope that they will not only give you some great advice on eating seasonally and locally, but will also provide inspiration on what’s possible within your own backyard.
We hope you enjoy these stories from Beyond the foodies’ fence...
In Autumn we took a sneak peak at a veggie garden out at Lal Lal (Hyperlink to Ithaca feature), so this time we thought we would take a look at the Ballarat Community Garden where over 80 people from the Ballarat area garden, chat, work, cook and generally have a pretty good time. Take a peek and get inspired!

There is one thing that makes de-icing the windscreen, splitting wood for the fire and breaking the ice on the chooks water worthwhile – and that is rhubarb! Topped with yoghurt for breakfast, or bubbling in a crumble for dinner, rhubarb it is the perfect antidote to the winter blues. And for those home gardeners that didn’t quite get their autumn planting done on time (hmmm who would that be?), it could well be one of the few things coming out of your garden at the moment.
So, for those unfortunates that haven’t got a lot coming out of your garden, and are having to buy your fresh produce, the pick of Victoria’s winter produce, according to Environment Victoria, is:
Apples, beetroot, broad beans, broccoli, brussel sprouts, cabbage, carrot, cauliflower, celery, grapefruit, jerusalem artichokes, kiwi fruit, leeks, lemons, lettuce, limes, mandarins (imperial), onions, oranges (navel), parsley, parsnips, pears, potatoes, rhubarb, silverbeet, snow peas, spinach, spring onion, turnips

Food innovations at Ithaca
Hi, about 3 years ago Marty and I moved to our bush block in Lal Lal and have never looked back. We often reminisce about our little single fronted cottage in Williamstown with its tiny courtyard, but rarely with nostalgia (especially with our gorgeous little boy Lachie now running around)!
We have always been interested in growing our own food, both for taste and as a way to reduce our impact on the environment. There is something magical about standing in the garden eating a tomato straight from the vine – you don’t get less food miles than that and the taste is divine.

Onions!
At my Buninyong garden, I have just planted the onions! I have garlic (I am a bit late with this!) and leeks (also late) to go. Read more for the full list, and how to get it emailled to you every month!
