6 November 2010Five thousand people attended the Replace Hazelwood Rally in Melbourne today, increasing pressure on John Brumby and Ted Baillieu to commit to replacing all of Hazelwood power station within the next term of Government.
See the video above, featuring quick BREAZE cameos.
BREAZE was on hand with our sturdy smokestack to lend our efforts to those of the numerous other groups who had gathered from across the state. We heard some fantastic speeches, including from Prof. David Karoly, who did some sums on how many people would be displaced by the continued operation of Hazelwood because of rising sea levels. The answer was '10,000 or an average sized Victorian country town'. The maths are here. At this stage, the ALP is promising to close a quarter of the station by 2014. Given that the Commonwealth Bank has recently written down its stake in the station to virtually nothing, it's clear that its possible to go much further and close the whole thing down in the next term of parliament. We still wait for the coalition to make any promise on Hazelwood at all. Feel free to contact our local candidates and let them know how you feel about this. |
